03 Feb How to Pack for Your Upcoming Residential Move
Regardless of whether you are moving down the street or across the country, there is no doubt that the process can take a lot of time, energy, and hard work. The good news is, moving doesn’t have to completely disrupt your life. Efficient packing is a major step in the right direction to help get your move off on the right foot. Read below for a few suggestions from our moving professionals to assist you as you pack for your upcoming move.
DECIDE HOW YOU ARE GOING TO MOVE
Before you start packing, figure out how you are going to move. Do you plan on doing everything yourself or hiring professional help? Factors such as timeline and budget are major items to consider when making moving plans. If you want to contract a full service moving company, make sure you give yourself enough time to plan ahead and select the best moving company for your needs. For residential moves, it is best to reach out at least 30-60 days prior to your desired move date.
MAKE A PACKING LIST
Before you start packing, make a list. This will keep you organized, which can be a make-or-break part of the relocation process. We suggest categorizing everything by room. Not only will this simplify the packing process, it will also make your life easier when it comes time to unpack everything at your new home.
SAY GOODBYE TO SOME ITEMS
Be honest, there are probably some items in your current home that you never use or even forgot you owned. Take this opportunity to get rid of these things. Have a garage sale or donate these items to charity. If it isn’t something you plan on using in your new home, don’t bother packing it in the first place. Best of all, it will save your movers time during loading and unloading, which in turn will save you money!
PLAN AHEAD
Give yourself plenty of time to pack. Waiting until the last minute will only add unnecessary stress to your move. Start early so you can take your time and organize everything properly. With that being said, make sure you find a balance. If you start too early, you may end up living out of boxes for weeks. Pack non-essential spaces first, such as guest areas and storage closets.
GATHER SUPPLIES AND GET PACKING!
Make sure you have all of the necessary supplies to pack. These include boxes or plastic totes, box tape, packing paper, shrink wrap for pictures, and a permanent marker to label items. Labeling each box so you know what is in it will be a big time saver during the unpacking process. Be sure to take your time and pack your items with care.
