How To Choose The Right Moving Company

How To Choose The Right Moving Company

Are you preparing for a move this year? Hiring the right moving company may seem overwhelming at first, but we’re here to help! Here are a few suggestions from our moving professionals to help you get started.

PLAN AHEAD

Start your research early to ensure you have plenty of time to compare companies and estimates. Waiting until the last minute will just add unnecessary stress to your move. Keep in mind, if a company is available on short notice and for a price that seems too good to be true, there’s probably a reason. We suggest reaching out 30-60 days prior to your move date.

READ REVIEWS

Check out online reviews and ask others for recommendations. Reviews on trusted sites like Google and Yelp are a good place to start. Conversations with friends, colleagues, and your realtor can provide you with valuable insight as well. Don’t hesitate to ask around!

GET ESTIMATES

Once you’ve done your research and compiled a list of the best moving companies, it’s time to get estimates. As a rule of thumb, if a company doesn’t provide you with an in-home estimate, you probably don’t want to hire them. Making sure the company has a complete understanding of the contents that need to be moved is necessary to ensure you are getting an accurate price. If possible, get at least two in-person estimates before making a decision.

FIND OUT WHAT’S INCLUDED

Be sure to ask specifics regarding what services the moving company offers. Do you want to pack everything yourself or have the movers take care of it? Do you need storage? Are you looking for a white glove moving experience? Asking the right questions will help you avoid unexpected costs on moving day.

CHECK FOR LICENSE AND INSURANCE

Keep in mind that there’s more to a company’s credibility than good reviews and pricing. An intrastate license, which is governed by a state licensing authority, is necessary for all local moves. In North Carolina specifically, the NCUC is responsible for regulating this. In addition, the moving company must hold a valid interstate license from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to move between state lines. There are also a lot of companies that operate without insurance, so be sure to look into that as well.

GO WITH YOUR GUT

At the end of the day, trust your instincts when choosing a moving company. If you have a good feeling about a company, go with them. You ultimately know what is best for you!
