14 Jul FIVE TIPS FOR MOVING COLLEGE STUDENTS
With college move-in fast approaching, the reality that you may be leaving home for the first time is probably setting in. Although it is an exciting time, there is no doubt that packing and moving from your childhood home can be stressful. Thinking about everything you need to bring may feel overwhelming at first, but here are five tips that will help you get settled in no time.
FOCUS ON ESSENTIALS
For those leaving home for the first time, packing for college can certainly seem like a huge undertaking. Start by making a list of all the items you will absolutely need at your new place. Focus on your essentials first to ensure you don’t accidentally leave something necessary behind. Keep in mind, if you are moving into a dorm, there is a good chance you will have limited space. If you have a roommate, be sure to coordinate with them so you don’t have duplicates of everything. This can help you cut back on unwanted clutter in your new space.
PACK SMART
Although taking time to organize your belongings as you pack may take a little extra time on the front end, it will save you in the long run. Avoid throwing everything into bags and organize everything into plastic totes or storage bins instead. Not only will these allow you to organize more efficiently, they are also more durable. This will help prevent unnecessary damage to your things, make the unloading process easier, and provide you with additional storage throughout the school year.
PLAN YOUR LAYOUT
Prior to move-in day, take some time to consider the layout for your new place. Having a general idea of where you want to place your furniture and personal belongings will help limit the amount of times items need to be moved. This will also cut back on move-in time, allowing you to get settled more quickly.
INSPECT YOUR NEW SPACE
Although you are probably eager to be moved in, don’t skip out on the inspection. Make sure you thoroughly examine your new space prior to unloading everything. Otherwise, you may be charged for damage that was there before you moved in. Take pictures with your phone so you have documentation of the existing damage.
SHOP WHEN YOU GET THERE
For items you don’t already have at home, consider waiting to shop until you get there. Once you are moved in, you will have a better idea of how much space you still have available. If you have a roommate, this could also give you an opportunity to shop together and split the cost of items you are sharing.
